Battle of Rivers Bridge State Historic Site marks one of the Confederacy's attempts to slow General Sherman's march through South Carolina in early 1865. It is the only preserved battlefield in the South Carolina state park system. A short guided trail, about half a mile, uses interpretive panels to explain the fighting, and ranger-led tours visit the earthen fortifications that still stand. The 390-acre site borders the Salkehatchie River and Three Mile Creek and has about three miles of hiking trails. Rental shelters and a community building are available for groups, and the quiet riverside setting suits a picnic after a tour.
