About this park
Sandy Island Beach State Park is part of the Eastern Lake Ontario Dune and Wetland System, a 17-mile stretch from Richland in Oswego County north to Jefferson County. The dunes formed from wind and wave action of a giant inland sea that preceded Lake Ontario and are the only significant freshwater dune site in the northeastern United States. The system gives hikers, birders and canoeists many places to explore.
