Kolomoki Mounds State Park near Blakely protects one of the largest Woodland-era mound sites in the southeastern United States, occupied roughly between 350 and 750 AD. The site includes ceremonial and burial mounds that rise above the surrounding woodland. An archaeology museum built over part of an excavated mound displays artifacts and explains the culture of the people who lived here. Trails lead to the mounds, and a lake offers fishing, paddling and swimming. Cabins and campsites make it easy to extend a visit. Parking is $5 per vehicle, and camping costs $20 to $42 per night. It is a must-see for anyone interested in the ancient history of the Southeast.
