Sonoita Creek State Natural Area protects about 9,000 acres of pristine creek corridor and surrounding hills in southern Arizona. Cottonwood and willow trees line the water, creating lush habitat that is rare in the region and rich with wildlife. The area is a premier destination for birding, with many species attracted to the creek and the mix of habitats. Backcountry hiking gives experienced visitors a chance to explore quiet terrain away from developed areas, and the scenery is especially beautiful in spring and fall. Access is through Patagonia Lake State Park, so the same fees apply. Bring water and a map, and be prepared for a remote experience.
