Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park near Crescent City is the wildest and northernmost of California's redwood parks. Ancient trees rise along the Smith River, one of the state's last major undammed rivers, creating a landscape of remarkable beauty and clarity. Stout Grove and other groves offer easy walks beneath giant trees, and the river's clear, green water is ideal for swimming and kayaking in summer. The park is part of the larger Redwood National and State Parks system, and its campground makes it easy to stay overnight among the giants. Day use is $10 per vehicle, and camping runs $35 to $50 per night. Fog and rain are common, so pack layers even in summer.
