Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park near Micanopy was Florida's first state preserve and protects about 21,000 acres of wet prairie, marsh and forest. The wide-open landscape feels almost like a piece of the American plains in the middle of north-central Florida. Wild bison and horses roam the prairie, and alligators, sandhill cranes and many other birds are common sights. An observation tower and a network of trails offer excellent wildlife viewing, and a campground provides a comfortable place to stay. Entry is $6 per vehicle. Bring binoculars, water and sun protection, since much of the prairie is open and exposed.
