Mount Blue State Park, established in 1955, is one of the larger parks in the Maine system at 7,489 acres, spread across two distinct areas in the western Maine mountains near the town of Weld. The Webb Lake area offers the park's main developed facilities, while the separate Center Hill section provides additional hiking access deeper into the surrounding mountain terrain. A sandy beach and bathhouse on Webb Lake anchor the park's summer recreation, alongside an amphitheater and nature center that support ranger-led programming throughout the season, a level of interpretive infrastructure not found at many of Maine's smaller parks. Hiking trails climb toward the summit of Mount Blue itself and neighboring peaks, rewarding hikers with sweeping views over western Maine's lakes-and-mountains region, a landscape of rolling hills and glacial lakes quite different from the rockier Penobscot Bay coast. A substantial campground supports extended stays, and the park's location places it within easy reach of the broader Rangeley Lakes and Sugarloaf ski region, making it a natural stop for visitors exploring western Maine beyond the immediate coast. Its combination of lake swimming, genuine mountain hiking, and strong programming has made Mount Blue one of the more complete, family-oriented parks in the entire state system.
