Fort Owen State Park is a 1.9-acre historic site at 3,398 feet that preserves Montana's first permanent European-style settlement, established in 1850. The location hosted the state's first sawmill, gristmill, irrigation system, cattle herd, and European-style school. Visitors can see the adobe East Barracks built in 1857, the original root cellar, and the well. Interpretive displays tell the story of the post, and the park offers cultural heritage tours, photography, and picnicking. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park is ADA accessible and pet friendly, with vault toilets, picnic tables, and parking. It is open March 1 through October 31, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and closed from November through February.
