Pala'au State Park sits on the central highlands of Molokai in a quiet ironwood forest. It is a peaceful place to enjoy fresh mountain air, and its trails and picnic areas give it a relaxed, out-of-the-way feel. The park is best known for the Kalaupapa Lookout, which offers a dramatic view down sea cliffs to the Kalaupapa Peninsula, the historic settlement once used to isolate people with Hansen's disease. A short trail leads to Kauleonanahoa, or Phallic Rock, a landmark tied to Hawaiian fertility traditions. Entry is free. Treat the lookout and cultural sites with respect, and take time to read the interpretive signs.
