On several occasions during the Revolutionary War, Major General Henry Knox, commander of the American artillery, set up his headquarters at John Ellison's 1754 Georgian-style house in Vails Gate. The site shows how the Ellisons and other mid-Hudson Valley families lived 200 years ago, including their milling and trade, which shipped flour from their mill down the Hudson to New York City. House tours run Wednesday-Saturday at 10 and 11 a.m. and 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m., and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m., from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Other times are by appointment.
