Myakka River State Park near Sarasota is one of the largest and oldest state parks in Florida, covering roughly 57,000 acres of wetlands, prairies and oak hammocks along a wild and winding river. Wide-open skies and shallow lakes make it one of the best places in the state to see wildlife. A canopy walkway lifts visitors into the treetops for a bird's-eye view of the forest, and airboat tours explore the waters of Upper Myakka Lake. Alligators, wading birds and other wildlife are commonly seen, and trails, paddling routes, campsites and cabins offer plenty of ways to explore. Entry is $6 per vehicle. Winter and early spring bring the best birdwatching and the most comfortable weather.
