Lahontan State Recreation Area, established in 1971, has 69 miles of shoreline along Lahontan Reservoir, originally built for irrigation. It is popular for boating, fishing, water skiing, horseback riding, and camping, and canoeing from Fort Churchill to the lake is possible when conditions permit. Wildlife includes wild horses, bobcats, foxes, and deer, and bald eagles nest here. The developed campground at Silver Springs Beach #7 is open year-round, and primitive beach camping is allowed, with a 14-day limit per 30-day period. Showers and flush toilets are closed in the off-season from October to May.
