Buckhorn Island State Park is an 895-acre nature preserve of marsh, meadow and woods. It is the last remnant of the vast marshes and meadows that once bordered the Niagara River. The public can walk nature trails, hike, bike, kayak, canoe, fish and cross-country ski. Wetland restoration is ongoing to re-establish wetland cover and water levels and increase native plants and wildlife, with more public access planned.
