Mount Mitchell State Park is in Yancey County, about 30 miles northeast of Asheville, and was the beginning of North Carolina's state parks system. At 6,684 feet, the mountain is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. An observation deck gives views on clear days. Easy summit trails explore the Fraser fir forest, and a network of challenging trails, including the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail, extends into adjacent wilderness. Camping is available.
