West Whitlock Recreation Area was a popular campsite for the Arikara and Mandan in the past and now draws campers and fishermen to the Lake Oahe shoreline. The area was named for Mrs. J.F. Whitlock, whose pioneering family once owned the land, and Whitlock Crossing was a small settlement with a ferry across the river. The campground has 105 campsites and two camping cabins. Boating, fishing, hiking, paddling and picnicking are available. The park is about 18 miles west of Gettysburg off US Highway 212.
