Sluice Boxes State Park protects the Belt Creek Canyon, where soaring cliffs and precipitous ledges rise above the creek. The canyon holds the remains of mines, a railroad, and historic cabins, including the Barker mines and the Montana Central Railroad. The park is best suited to hikers and anglers comfortable with primitive conditions. The trail is unmaintained, the water is cold and swift, and a rockslide advisory issued in April 2026 affects sections of the creek and trail, so visitors should check conditions before going. Activities include fishing, rafting, wildlife viewing, bird watching, photography, picnicking, and hunting in season. Backcountry camping requires a Backcountry Campsite Permit, available through FWP headquarters.
