Van Damme State Park near Little River sits on the Mendocino coast, with a sheltered cove, forested canyons and a rare pygmy forest. It is one of the most varied and accessible parks on this part of the coast. The Fern Canyon Trail follows a creek through lush forest, and the pygmy forest offers a surprising look at tiny, ancient trees growing in poor soil. The cove is a popular place for sea kayaking, and camping makes it easy to stay overnight. Day use is $10 per vehicle, and camping runs $35 to $50 per night. Bring layers, since the coast can be foggy and cool.
