West Rock Ridge State Park in New Haven follows a long basalt ridge overlooking the city and Long Island Sound. Steep cliffs, hardwood forest and open ledges give it a wild, rugged feel just minutes from downtown. The park is best known for Judges Cave, a rocky refuge where two English judges who had signed the death warrant of King Charles I are said to have hidden in the 1600s. The Regicides Trail follows the ridge and offers views of New Haven, and the park's roads and trails serve hikers, bikers and picnickers. Entry is free. It is a great way to enjoy nature without leaving the city area.
