Fox Ridge State Park near Charleston is a rugged, forested park above the Embarras River in east-central Illinois. Steep ridges and deep ravines give it a hilly character that is a real surprise in a mostly flat part of the state. Trails lead through the woods and along the ridgelines, and rustic stone shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps add historic charm. The park is a popular place for hiking, picnicking and nature study, and it is especially beautiful in fall when the hardwoods turn color. There is no vehicle entry fee, and camping fees vary by site, from $8 to $45 per night. Wear sturdy shoes, since some trails are steep and rocky.
