Independence Rock, also called the Register of the Desert, carries more than 5,000 names of pioneers. One of the earliest signatures is from 1824. The rock got its name after an Independence Day celebration with William Sublette and 80 pioneers, and it became a landmark for more than 550,000 westward travelers. Its highest point is 136 feet above the surrounding terrain, and Devil's Gate, a 330-foot-deep cut made by the river, can be seen in the distance. The grounds are open 24 hours, year-round, weather permitting.
