Koke'e State Park on Kauai is a cool mountain forest park about 3,600 feet above sea level, offering a very different side of the Garden Isle. Native rainforest, misty ridges and dramatic views make it a favorite for hikers and nature lovers. Lookouts over the Kalalau Valley reveal enormous green cliffs plunging toward the sea, and a network of trails wanders through native forest and past streams and swamps. Cabins provide overnight stays for those who want to linger, and a small museum helps explain the area's natural history. The fee is $5 per vehicle plus $1 per person for non-residents. Temperatures are cooler than at the coast and clouds can roll in, so bring layers and check the weather before heading up.
