Cuyamaca Rancho State Park near Descanso covers about 26,000 acres of mountain forest, oak woodlands and meadows east of San Diego. The cooler, higher country is a welcome change from the coastal and desert areas nearby. About 100 miles of trails serve hikers, riders and bikers, and Stonewall Peak is a popular climb with wide views. Campgrounds and quiet forest roads make it a great base for a weekend, and the park's landscape is recovering from a large fire in 2003, with new growth showing across the hills. Day use is $10 per vehicle, and camping runs $35 to $50 per night. Fall color and spring wildflowers make those seasons especially rewarding.
