Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde preserves the best surviving example of an army fort from Arizona's Indian Wars era. Built in the 1870s, the fort was a base for soldiers who campaigned in central Arizona. Four original adobe buildings still stand, including officers' quarters that have been furnished to reflect life at the fort. A museum adds exhibits about the soldiers, scouts and civilians who lived and worked here, and the parade ground gives a sense of the post's original layout. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for youth, though prices can vary. It is a rewarding stop for history lovers traveling through the Verde Valley.
