Beaverhead Rock is a natural landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the 1805 Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sacagawea recognized it as resembling a beaver's head, a sign that she was nearing her Shoshone relatives and a chance to obtain horses. The prominent rock formation can be seen from a distance, and hiking to the summit offers views of the Beaverhead Valley and surrounding mountains. Visitors come for hiking, photography, wildlife viewing, and cultural heritage tourism. The park is 16 miles north of Dillon via Montana Highway 41. It is day-use only with minimal amenities, a small parking area, and pack-in, pack-out rules, and the road receives no winter maintenance.
