Pictograph Cave State Park is a 23-acre archaeological site near Billings that preserves three main caves inhabited by generations of prehistoric hunters. The park holds more than 100 pictographs, some of the artwork more than 2,000 years old. A three-quarter-mile loop trail leads to the caves, and the visitor center offers interpretive displays, a gift shop, and restrooms. Visitors come for archaeology, hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, and cultural and geological education. The park is day-use only with no camping. Summer hours (May through September) are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and winter hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
