Longhorn Cavern State Park is about 1.5 hours northwest of Austin, with a cave known for legends and for the geology of water-carved rock. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the original administration building and cleaned out the cave, and an exhibit tells their story. Entry to the park grounds is free, and the cavern is open only through paid guided tours. Visitors can also hike a trail or picnic.
