South Toledo Bend State Park, established in 2004, is the second of two Louisiana state parks located on the shores of the massive Toledo Bend Reservoir, sitting in Vernon Parish near the town of Anacoco. The park draws a steady stream of visitors for hiking, cycling, birding, camping, and wildlife watching along its stretch of the reservoir's more than 1,200 miles of shoreline. The park serves as an active nesting ground for bald eagles, drawing birdwatchers hoping to spot the raptors along the water, and a two-lane boat ramp gives anglers and boaters direct reservoir access. South Toledo Bend holds a distinction unique among Louisiana's state parks: it is the only one in the system with dedicated trails for all-terrain vehicles, offering 10 miles of ATV routes through hilly terrain whose sandy soil drains quickly even after heavy rain, letting four-wheelers keep riding through the surrounding forest. Nineteen cabins located near the lake shoreline and 60 campsites give overnight visitors a range of accommodations, and the park recorded more than 27,000 visitors in 2022 alone. Clear night skies over the reservoir make it, alongside its sister park to the north, a popular spot for stargazing after a day of fishing for bass and sac-a-lait.
