Wilson State Park sits in the Smoky Hills on the south shore of Wilson Lake, nicknamed the "Little Atlantic" for water clarity and a rocky shoreline unusual among Kansas reservoirs, most of which sit in muddier prairie terrain. The comparison to an ocean coastline, while a stretch, reflects genuine local pride in the lake's unusually clear water. Dramatic Dakota sandstone cliffs rise along parts of the shoreline, giving the park some of the most striking rock scenery in the Kansas system, and striped bass fishing here draws anglers specifically seeking that species, which is stocked in relatively few Kansas lakes. The combination of clear water and rocky terrain makes Wilson popular for scuba diving as well. The Switchgrass mountain biking trail has built a strong reputation among Kansas riders, adding to Wilson's profile as both a scenic lake destination and a serious trail-riding location. Together, water clarity, dramatic cliffs, and quality trails make Wilson one of the more distinctive reservoir parks in north-central Kansas.
