William B. Umstead State Park is in Wake County, about 10 miles northwest of downtown Raleigh, a retreat from city life. It has an extensive network of hiking and multiuse trails. Three manmade lakes and their tributaries are good for fishing. Both park entrances have picnic shelters, and Crabtree Creek has camping areas. Group camps and the historic Maple Hill Lodge offer rustic overnight stays. Boat rentals are available.
