Gifford Woods State Park sits at the base of Killington and Pico peaks and is close to the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail, making it a favorite stop for hikers. It is also popular in fall for its bright foliage. Vermont bought 13 acres from Lee Pearsons in 1931 and established the park. Season runs from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the third weekend in October.
