Aiken State Park sits along the South Fork of the Edisto River in the South Carolina Midlands, on about 1,067 acres of pine and hardwood woods. It is a quiet place built around fishing, paddling and simple time on the water. A 1.7-mile canoe and kayak trail runs down the river, and four small lakes offer fishing. A spring-fed swimming area, boat rentals and an artesian well near the paddle launch add to the day-use options. Three picnic shelters can be rented for groups. Two Civilian Conservation Corps companies built the park during the Great Depression, one of them an African-American detachment, and some of their work still stands. Overnight visitors can use a campground of about 25 sites.
