Lowden State Park near Oregon sits on bluffs above the Rock River in northern Illinois. Tall trees, open lawns and river views give it a graceful, park-like setting, and it is one of the most scenic spots along the river. The park is best known for Lorado Taft's 50-foot "Eternal Indian" statue, a monumental sculpture that overlooks the river and is often described as a tribute to Chief Black Hawk. Trails lead to overlooks and through wooded areas, and a campground makes it easy to stay overnight. There is no vehicle entry fee, and camping fees vary by site, from $8 to $45 per night.
