Amicalola Falls State Park near Dawsonville is home to the tallest cascading waterfall in the Southeast, dropping 729 feet through a forested mountain gorge. The falls are the centerpiece of a park that blends spectacular scenery with easy access from the Atlanta area. Visitors can view the falls from nearby overlooks or climb the stairs and trails for closer views at different levels. The park is also the southern approach to the Appalachian Trail, and many thru-hikers begin their journey here with a walk to Springer Mountain. A mountaintop lodge, cabins and campsites offer places to stay. Parking is $5 per vehicle, and camping costs $20 to $42 per night. Go in spring, when water levels are high, or in fall for colorful mountain views.
