Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park showcases six beehive-shaped charcoal ovens built between 1876 and 1879 to process silver ore. After mining stopped, the structures reportedly sheltered travelers and served as a hideout for stagecoach bandits. The park is in the Egan Mountain Range at 7,000 to 8,000 feet in a Great Basin high desert environment. Visitors camp at Willow Creek Campground, fish for rainbow, brown, and brook trout, hike, mountain bike, cross-country ski, snowshoe, and ride horses. Elk, mule deer, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, grouse, and many birds live in the park. It is open year-round, seven days a week.
