Giant City State Park near Makanda is one of the most popular parks in southern Illinois, known for massive sandstone bluffs and boulders that form natural "streets" in the Shawnee Hills. The rock formations give the park a dramatic, almost otherworldly feel. Hikers can explore the Giant City Nature Trail and see the Devil's Standtable, a mushroom-shaped rock formation. A historic stone lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps adds a warm, rustic touch, and the park offers camping, cabins and equestrian trails. Rock climbing and rappelling are also popular in designated areas. There is no vehicle entry fee, and camping fees vary by site, from $8 to $45 per night. It is a great destination in every season.
