Fort Montgomery was the scene of a fierce Revolutionary War battle for control of the Hudson River. Visitors can tour the remains of the 14-acre fortification on a cliff above the Hudson. On October 6, 1777, British, Loyalist and Hessian forces attacked Fort Montgomery and nearby Fort Clinton, and the outnumbered American Patriots were driven out of their forts at bayonet point. The site is open Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m., mid-April through October. In the off-season it is open by reservation for group tours.
