Elkhorn State Park preserves the remnants of a 19th-century mining town as examples of frontier architecture. Two historic structures, Fraternity Hall and Gilliam Hall, are owned by Montana FWP and open to the public, and both are documented in the Historic American Buildings Survey. Visitors come for history and photography. Interpretive signs along the streets explain the town, but the remaining buildings are privately owned, so visitors are asked to respect private property. The park is open year-round. There is no camping in or near Elkhorn; it is pack-in, pack-out, with a seasonal portable latrine and picnic tables.
