The Alabama State Capitol is a National Historic Landmark on a hilltop overlooking downtown Montgomery. It functions as a working museum of state history and politics, and the governor's office and other executive offices are still located there. Delegates from southern states met in its senate chamber in 1861 to form the Confederacy, and a marker on the west portico shows where Jefferson Davis was inaugurated. In 1965 the Selma to Montgomery voting rights march ended at its steps, where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke. The building is a stop on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, with daily self-guided and guided tours and a museum store at the Union Street entrance. Owned by the Alabama Historical Commission, it is a historic site rather than a state park and has no camping.
