Shoup Bay State Marine Park near Valdez sits at the tidewater face of Shoup Glacier in Prince William Sound. Steep mountains, blue ice and calm inlet waters make it one of the most dramatic marine parks in Alaska. The park is known for a kittiwake rookery, where thousands of seabirds nest on the cliffs, and for protected paddling waters that are ideal for kayakers. A public-use cabin offers a rare chance to stay in the wilderness. Wildlife such as sea otters, seals and whales may be seen along the way. Access is remote, and the cabin costs $100 per night. Plan carefully for weather, tides and safe boating.
